Abstract:

Spintronics faces fundamental challenges in the efficient manipulation of quantum degrees of freedom in materials. The recent emergence of the orbital Hall effect has opened new routes for generating and manipulating angular momentum without relying exclusively on heavy elements with strong spin-orbit coupling, potentially overcoming one of the material limitations of conventional spintronics related to the scarcity of heavy metals. At the same time, graphene continues to provide a versatile platform for exploring novel transport phenomena owing its unique electronic properties.

In this talk, I will provide a brief introduction to the emerging field of orbitronics, where the orbital degree of freedom is exploited for information transport and conversion. Using numerical simulations, I will discuss how spin and orbital contributions to charge interconversion can be disentangled in Bi(1-x)Sbx and Co/Al interfaces. Finally, I will present perspectives on the connection between spin and orbital transport and THz emission, together with first-principles calculations.
